Pool party!
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:13:48 am »

Has anybody worked out a reliable way to repeatedly drown teach swimming to dwarves without killing them?

This would be especially helpful to my military, who seem intent on following enemies into the river.

from the DF Wiki:
Quote
Water can have a depth between 0 and 7.
Depth    Description
0    No water present.
1    Water may evaporate.
2
3
4    Dangerous terrain. Movement trains swimming.
5
6
7    Risk of drowning. Can have water on floorless tile above.

You can create a room full of 3 levels depth water (pressure plate who open a floodgate when 3< and close when >4).
Burrow military to the room. Advice: I never tested it.

Thank you that should be sufficient data, and a sound enough method of operation.

Side note: Awesome signature.

Once I've recovered from the recent siege and have constructed the relevant apparatus, I will post findings and schematics.

Just a note here, but use a door instead of a floodgate if you are planning to automate anything involving water. This is because doors respond instantly to close/open commands, where floodgates have a wait of 100 ticks. As a result if the water quickly turns the pressure plate on and then off, it's possible to lose one of the commands during the delay and end up with a floodgate that is stuck open or closed. I also highly suggest that you add a manual control lever into anything involving infinite sources of water, that way if something does get stuck open you can shut if off in order to save your fortress.

Duly noted. My thanks for your warning as I had entirely forgotten that fact.
