How do i throw something into a pit.. liek a kitten?

I am still getting the hang of this game, but i keep reading things suggesting throwing things into a  pit, how?

With a name like yours, I am slightly suspicious of your intentions. You do intend to cause severe mental scarring upon yourself and/or your dwarves, right?

Set up a pit zone (i) -> (p)
Then (P) to select the chump for throwing.
