upgrading computer, what would make DF run faster?

As much power/core as possible. DF mainly only uses one, so any more won't help.

I'm getting a quad core anyway for other reasons, but what do you mean it mostly uses one?  I thought it couldn't multithread at all.

DF multithreads the graphics. You can probably guess that it's not a huge improvement.

Regarding your initial question, the wiki says that your RAM latency is most important. A better CPU is nice, but faster RAM will really make a difference.

A big honkering power supply.  Containing an exhaust fan so powerful, it blows over the houseplants.  An OS set to high power profile.  No extra USB crap.  Unplug cameras, printers, etc.  USB's never power down.  Avoid a laptop.
