So I did look on the wiki, but I can't quite figure out what's going on- my dwarf has claimed a leatherworkers shop, and is demanding leather.  There was leather right next to him in the tanner's workshop, but he was having none of that.  I established a leather stockpile to see if he'd draw from there, but again no dice.  Will dwarves demand specific types of leather?  His favored variety is pond grabber, and I have no way to get that at the moment.

Edited:  To clarify, he is not demanding anything but leather, and it's a secretive mood specifically.

Yeah, hes probably asking for a specific type of leather. This is the main reason I ask for all leather types if nothing else is desperately needed when the caravans arrive.

It happens sometimes, just wall him in and have a coffin ready to be used when he dies. One of the quirks that makes dwarf fortress fun.
