Was he able to walk? Was he unconcious? Suicidal? Was he in jail for a long time?

Dwarves can still digest food when their stomach is missing and they have no teeth or tongue, right?

If he was insane, then we wouldn't eat or drink until he was dead. If he can't move because of injuries, and no one feeds him, he will starve. Also, babies who's mother's have died will need people to feed them, which doesn't happen all the time.

At a guess, I would say failed mood that didn't lead to berserker. Then there're other ways to break them down ( destroying masterwork, locking them up with stuff, etc ) but your fortress don't looks developed enough except by accident. Then there're that unfortunate overworking dwarf that comes in from too far away while hungry, but usually someone would've picked up some food to cram into their craw.

Or you're dealing with starvation, and it's the first :D

Perhaps he was locked away for a while, and only just ogt out and died on his way there.

Happened to me once. Baron went all the way to well, died in front of it.

Is that possible? I've had dwarves ignore burrows to eat, drink and sleep, though they sometimes will just drop cold where they're standing.

Yay! Although, of course, finding out he was a mad dwarf is indicative of worse troubles. Like tantrum spirals.

Might I ask why it fell?

Wait, insane dwarves start eating and drinking again after they die?

I think he went insane from the tileset. ;)  (Look, I just can't tell what's going on.  I can see a plump helmet, yes, but little else makes sense.  Anyway, that wasn't why I was replying.)

Just wanted to say that dwarves will quit burrows for food and drink.  I sometimes stress my exploring miners in that way (get the exploration done quickly, and let the breaks cue up when they should be de-burrowed and another miner get in there.  Also other vital (or seemingly urgent) digging projects.

Your logs might reveal something, but everyone now and then I find you need to check up on everyone to see if there's any healt problems I've not noted, etc...  (you've got a CMD, yes?)
