They are pretty flimsy

If things go horribly wrong, a nice trick is to draft everyone into the military. No armor or weapons, just draft them and zerg the enemy.

This is much better than having everyone run around in panic while being slaughtered like a Stray Llama (Tame).

Some undead caught me with my pants bridge pants down (ok I didn't even have a bridge), and my only armored dwarf was sleeping downstairs. To make things worse, my bookkeeper/broker broke the burrows restriction and ran outside, chased by an undead. I drafted 14 useless dwarves and threw them at the enemies. They swarmed the undead with no casualties, and even saved the broker.

Of course, it can be less effective against an armed and armored group of goblins, but it should still work if you rush them while they have their squads spread out.
