Easiest way to make a .GIF for avatar use?

Yeah, I had an idea for an avatar and I need to know how to make it.

GIMP has some plugins for outputting gifs.

...you don't need plugins. GIMP can save to gif by default. Choose the animate by layers option (instead of flattening the image) and it will save as an animated gif. Make sure to choose an appropriate delay!

Yep, that's how it works.

You can choose additive or replace, to - most people choose replace.

Photoshop can do the same, as far as I know. (One would hope so.)

Instead of figuring that though, I went with MSpaint and a free GIF making website. :P

A decent second choice. It's how I used to do it... until I realized it was a LOT harder for most gifs. :P

I don't know exactly what you're doing, obviously, so figured I'd choose the "easiest" solution for most of the possible situations. If you're just cycling between a couple existing images, a gif website is probably best, yeah.
