So a volcano

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Which appears to be just below ground level! I personally have never seen such a thing, its pretty awesome. Can some people provide ideas for my fortress?

One thing ive done is embark with 7 miners, just wanna focus this fort on military, also want an arena of some sorts. Gonna try and set up some sort of Spartan training program, where only the dwarfs with the highest attributes are put through horrific battles in order to prove their worth. Probably in bone/leather armor.

Yeah I love those embarks, they're hard to find. My favorite strategy is to build an aboveground fortress around the volcano: one tower full of marksdwarves at each corner, then a bridge which crosses the volcano before leading into your fort. Goblins get to cross the bridge while dodging bolts (and traps, if you like) and plummeting into lava. Note you can't get a single bridge object (maximum length: 10) to cross the entire volcano, at least part of it has to be a 'bridge' constructed out of normal stone floors. Of course, 'bridges' constructed of floor tiles are better anyway, you can cover them in dodge-me traps.

If you like that, try this one. 4x4 lakeshore embark with a volcano pipe coming up in the middle of it, a couple z-levels short of the water's surface. When you first unpause the game you'll get all the water rushing in and capping the magma pipe with obsidian. As a bonus it's got 6k hematite, lots of copper and tin for bronze, flux stone, one aquifer layer, and other assorted goodies.

I love those things. I like to build a tower around them, but I build towers around lots of things. Lairs, caves, smaller towers. Towers are cool.

It's just like 40d with magma vents. Those were the days.
My main problem with volcanoes is the amount of z-levels they produce, the extreme majority I'll never even consider using. Some high z-level embarks can be rather taxing on your performance.

Personally I love setting up tall hollow towers above magma vents with rooms and small bridges going over the gap. Link the bridges up to a leaver system and you have both an effective way to deal with invaders and a way to kill bad dwarves.
