DF2012 Video Tutorial
« on: October 22, 2012, 09:23:48 pm »

So having been frustrated with the lack of any up to date and concise video tutorials for dwarf fortress I've finally gotten around to making one. I'm trying to keep the videos fast so people can learn fast from them.
I've currently only got 2 videos up. One on getting for fortress established and the other a brief explanation of weorldgen and customising your embark.

Feedback would be great, I've already ended up teaching any of my friends who are interested in playing so I've ran out of people to test it on.

I'll Check it out and give you feedback as soon as i'm done

Done:
Forgive me for not watching the first one as it is an hour long, the second one seems good. I realize that the world gen and embark is one of the harder things to figure out when your starting out so the length seems good for the subject but I encourage you to keep them very specific (i.e. Farming, designations, traps, buildings, magma, ore types). Things like that and then keeping the videos very short and staying within the subject while still being thorough. That way people can just look on your channel for what they're having trouble with and then have it explained easily and quickly. I guess what I'm trying to say is try not to make it a lets play, try to make it a series of tutorials that don't have to be watched in order. Of course the final decision is up to you, so if you'd prefer to do it a different way then by all means do it. A video series isn't going to be very good if the person making them doesn't like making them.

The rest isn't going to be a let's play, the first video was to establish the core parts of having a fortress. Everything else will be compartmentalised as 'setting up a hospital' 'how do I military' 'Irrigation' and so on.

Watched the first one for about 40 mins.
Pretty decent video, I've watched so many DF Let's Play and Tutorials on YouTube. This is better then a 12 yr old boy in his room whining the whole time. A duo video is unique too. The main voice is too soft and was hard to hear so I turn my volume all the way up, and then the second voice is loud as balls! So... I would advise to fix that. It's very informative and pretty good. I could complain about you fortress design,  :o, but everyone does things differently, and the general informative point has been presented just fine.

Fortress design wasn't planned at all, I was just packing things in. I'd complain if I saw it too. I'll try to fix the sound issue, thanks for watching so much.

Criticism of Dwarf Fortress 2012 Tutorial: Worldgen and Embark

Viewer no.11 = Knutor

I agree an edited Adv Worldgen is the way to go for playing Fortress play, these days.

I would recommend when editing that first Adv World, to copy the Lazy Newb World size: 33x33, and edit its parameters.  I like to use a Title, so I can separate the saves easier, when loading games, between sessions.  So I'd start by renaming the Title, Knutorville.

Then inside, I'd change these parameters to 0.  Titans, Caves(Kobolds), Vamps, Werewolves, and Secrets all set to 0. These settings make the world drastically less difficult.  Good for learning the UI and just enjoying things, for a bit longer on Fortress Play.

Then explain the F6: save, after making those parameter changes.  I don't believe you explained that.  I'd start with the Play Now dwarfs, and adapt a playstyle from there.  Be a huge time saver.

Well structured feedback, thanks.

I'll add an annotation about saving, completely missed it without thinking. The idea for an easier world is a good one too, so I'll either add to the video or just put it in the description. The default world still won't have those settings, but you should be able to get through the tutorial before any but the kobolds become an issue. Not sure what I'll do about them.

Thanks.

I really enjoyed those two videos.  It's fun watching and hearing another human being play a game.  Good job, there.  My interest was kept the entire time, and I'm no beginner.

With kobolds the problem isn't how fast they show up.  Its how ungodly their stealth becomes in Fortress play.  It just sucks having mastercrafts disappear, right under the noses of watch dogs, and guards, both possess poor Observation skills.

See Observation isn't advancing right now.  But Kobold stealth levels certainly are, as the game progresses they become Ninjas.  This is more a progression change, so that fewer reembarks, have to be made as a result of crafter caused tantrum spirals.

Eventually the game will get more balanced, I trust Bay12 will do a good job.  Til then, Caves are off the map for me.  The Caves I'm mentioning are not Megabeast Caves, FYI.  If ya know LucasUP, help me get him to make these appointments in his world, Lazy Newb World.  They really do make a difference.

LucasUP only has Demons set to 0.  That helps tone down the Goblin officers, considerably and useful to keep.

Really pleased you enjoyed watching them. I wasn't aware of any of what you said about kobolds; I haven't played much of DF2012, it'll probably become more apparent as I go along that I'm learning or relearning a few aspects. Knowing what you've said, I can absolutely see getting rid of kobolds as a reasonable idea.
