Glass Hallways

My plan for my next fort; all the major hallways are glass all the way down.  Basically the major artery hallways would stack on each other.  Their floors would be glass blocks and the ground level would also be glass.  The important question is whether all levels would count as outdoor, thus preventing cave adaptation.

Glass constructions are no different from those made of normal stone in terms of whether or not light passes through them. Dwarves won't even be able to see through them.

However, you only need tiles to be considered above ground, and that status will remain permanently if the tile was ever exposed to sunlight. So if you dig up all the hallways they become above ground, then when you place your glass floors, they remain above ground.

sunlight seems to work rather strange in DF.
Every tile once exposed to the sun keeps the 'light' and 'above ground' attributes even when walled over with rock, glass or metal.
Tiles channeled down from a roofed over 'light above ground' tile also get this attribute.
If they have a roof they count as inside. So you can put tables, beds and stuff there.
Exposing the tiles once should prevent cave adaption. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Cave_adaptation

So it should work - but you have to channel out the tiles for your main hallways first and then build the glass walls & roofs. Would also work with stone/metal walls.
If you want your dwarfes to be able to look through the glass you have to use windows, grates or fortifications. These can also be made out of glass.
Glass bricks are not transparent in DF, think about low tech glass with a lot of impurity from magma/charcoal/non-refined sand, or the milky glass used for some bathroom windows and showers.

edit: well, ninja'd & typos

It will not make cave adaptation get any worse, BUT it won't make cave adaptation to get any better, either.  This has been tested extensively.

Windows made from anything in DF are transparent, even gem windows made from granite cabochons. The "glass" part isn't responsible.
