the epic combo that never ends
« on: October 27, 2012, 02:11:23 am »

you ever play a game where you start out, go to do a mission, and the odds are so far stacked against you it just seems retarded to go on with it, and in such a game, you go through with it anyway? you leap from foe to foe in a bandit camp full of archers and crossbowmen killing foe after foe, stacking up that "combo" of kills and lucky dodges? and the combo breaker never seems to come, and very soon you realize you have just wiped out an entire camp of 7 bandits with nothin but your neked hero and her trusty copper dagger with not a single injury to your name? it feels almost unreal. you look at the screen and wonder, "am I really playing DF right now?"

have you ever had an experience like this?

and the combo breaker finally comes when you actually get dressed, and get killed by a normal crow.

My dwarf spearman Tosid Spearpriests the Fatal Fist of Spines was pretty badass, but he was more like "bloody vengeance" than "epic combo". Goblins ambushed, and all 11 of my companions were killed in less than 10 rounds. Cue martial trance, vampire shenanigans, etc. etc.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sadly I had to retire him later when he suffered a crippling injury to the upper spine, rendering him unable to grasp, stand or even bite. Laaame.

Have you ever had an experience like this?
Taking on an entire city of goblins. Hhyyyesss. The combo ended, but it ended on a pile of 70 goblin corpses. 2 Dwarves. Martial trances.

My Axedwarf adventurer was like this. Several bandit camps, 5 rocs and 3 titans before his first injury: we were attacked by bandits, my entire party was slaughtered and only the enemy commander remained. He struck me in the lower left arm damaging the tendon and causing me to drop my axe. Quickly I put away my shield and grabbed the axe with my right arm and decapitated him. Since then I've gone on to kill another roc and 2 Ettins, survived more bandit attacks and retired 3 times.

I killed three titans with a copper knife before dying to a kobold ambush.

I was actually hoping that he'd survive until the version comes where you can use spines as a weapon.

It might be possible to sever the guts of a living opponent, but it always shows up as a Difficult/Impossible strike so I've never managed it. Spilling guts is easy, just keep slashing at the lower body until it happens (it might take a few opponents until you do it without killing them).

You can still throw things and be an effective adventurer. Don't give up!

I've cut off guts before. Fairly effective blunt instrument. Key thing is to break some bones so they fall unconscious - then you have a simple strike on cutting it so its basically guaranteed.
