Minuscule Strength Training From Pulling Levers
« on: October 25, 2012, 10:51:50 pm »

Much in the same way dwarves build up strength from turning pumps, I think another piece of equipment should be added to the dwarven gym: levers. Having a dwarf repeatedly pull a lever should give him an extremely small boost to strength, but large enough so that repeated flipping of a lever over a year or two will yield noticeable results. It would be by no means the most efficient way of training the strength attribute, but it would certainly be easy and hilarious. Just imagine, a huge stone room devoted to the mindless pulling of levers by dozens of cheese and potash makers.

Meh. Strength training from hauling boulders makes more sense.

Like I said, this is not to detract from training attributes in any other (definitely more efficient) manners, it's just to add a new ridiculous way to do it.

Emphasis on "ridiculous."

I'm not sure how dwarves make levers, but I doubt it would provide much more exercise than typing for a while.

Maybe it would work better if the lever were hooked up to a slade bridge or something.

Maybe.
I'd think that a simple stone bridge would work, given the weight of boulders. Just screw around with the pulleys.

I'd imagine rock levers are really large, heavy and unwieldy.

I'd imagine they're kept well-maintained and such, and besides, flipping a lever simply can't be comparable to lifting weights or something.

There're most likely counterbalance weights, pulley complex, mechanical toggles and so on. It's probably more comparable to working manual transmissions or hydraulic system levers, in my mind.

Yea pulling levers for muscles sounds incredibly stupid. I understand that different jobs have different effects but pulling lever is not what you do eight hours a day.

Well, some people does it for living, construction machinery for example, which's what I thinks of :D

And yet they don't get all heavily muscled...Besides, most of construction is more of knowing which lever to push.

Work at constructions is quite tough. I've done that. But in medieval period of DF everything was much more tougher. There is no electric tools of any kind.

Wait, we were originally talking about levers...

Dwarves use mechanical energy, I imagine it would be more like turning a car without power steering. I could see it theoretically building some muscle but it really doesn't seem like a priority at this point.
