What to play for my solo GCSE Music piece? (Guitar)
« on: September 30, 2012, 12:21:19 pm »

Hello everyone, I'm kinda' in a dilemma; I have no idea what I want to play for my solo piece. Any ideas? Technically to get up to the "Hard" level and get decent mark it needs to be: Somewhat fast, played on all  6 strings, good mix of strumming and picking ( Chords and a Solo would sort that ), no/little mistakes, stuff  like your slides, hammer 'ons and what have you. I Can't remember exactly what the marking sheet says.

Ideally, I would want so enjoy playing the song/enjoy the song, but that doesn't matter too much. The stuff I like is either too basic, slow or not a good mixture of playing styles. I think Johhny be Goode could be a good song to play? I like stuff from the 90's. Stone Rose's, Oasis etc. I also love Dire straits and Pink Floyd - but they're too slow to tick all the boxes to get top marks.

I'm hoping to get something played, perfected and performed by Christmas so I can get onto the Group piece and Composing next year as well as other important stuff.  ;)

Serious suggestions only please, thanks guys!

Nothing Else Matters by Metallica has always been fun for me to play, though it might be too slow and it's not something you can use a pick to play.

Joe Satriani - Always with me, always with you
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child
Slayer - Raining Blood

Just throwing out a few fairly complex songs that I find fun to play.

Thanks guys, might take a look at Voodoo Child - can't fall off with a bit of Hendrix. Oh, and I think that my mate is doing Everlong by the Foo Fighters.

You could play Fermented Offal Discharge by Necrophagist, its death metal, but i find the solo very-classical sounding and even non-metal fans love it, its highly complex though, involves sweeping and tapping. I bet you would impress people with this, there are plenty of tabs on UltimateGuitar if you wish to play it.
So here we go, at 3:00 the solo starts.
You can try Advanced Corpse Tumor
2:21
These would score you the best possible grade if you play, probably involves everything + more that you require for the test.
Or try Tornado of Souls by Megadeth if you want something easier, solo starts at 3:08.

Probably thats why they are used with pentagrams on covers of Satanic Black Metal albums.
