Need assistance of sarcasm experts for a work project.
« on: September 29, 2012, 01:31:26 pm »

I need help writing a sign-off mail for the portion of a product I'm working on...

Specifically, I want to imply disaster, for example:

"Thanks to the Titanic effort of the development team..."

thats... not really sarcasm. thats more of a play on words.

also sarcasm doesnt really work when you're writing, sadly.

Need more information. What product? For whom? What work did you do?

How about give us a draft version, and we'll make suggestions.

Best I can think of is something like "[And thanks to Urist McColleague...] without whom, this project would not have been as successful as it has been", if you have someone in mind who fits that.

Closer to sarcasm, but far nastier so ensure that they either deserve it or are the kind of person who appreciates it.  (Obviously works best if you know the end result is going to be a flop, as well.)

If it's for work, it's better not to put that kind of stuff in writing.  Or even to say it, but writing it leaves evidence and gives people the chance to form negative opinions based on it LONG after the event.  Unless the whole mail is humor in which case - I'd still recommend thinking twice about sending it.

If you mean it to be taken seriously as some kind of a warning, state it explicitly, almost no one is going to read the fluffy bits of an email carefully enough to pick up  subtle inferences.

Best I not say which company that I'm working for's product that I expect to have problems publicly (if that sentance makes sense)

The mail only goes to a small group of people that I work closely with; last month a coworker sent a signoff in poetry form, so I doubt it'll be more of an issue than the known problems in the upcoming release.

Ah, poetic forms...

I've been known to pass on similar things as sonnets (Shakespearean in form; not Shakespearean in beauty, alas, and awkward phrasing often used to adhere to the strict iambic pentameter).

I once had a good go at using a palindrome form.  (Well, several palindromic sentences mashed together.)  Wasn't pretty, though, and didn't make the final draft, and I'm not sure I could replicate the feat[1]. ;)

"Many thanks to [colleague X], who we were very lucky to get to work on this project."

"This project has achieved an unprecedented level of success..."

"The amount of effort that has been put into this project is astonishing..."

Double entendres are your friend for things like this.   ;D  They can be as subtle (or as blatant) as you like.
