traffic help
« on: October 05, 2010, 01:41:58 am »

Is there any way to tell these morons NOT to mine out the channel on one side, and to do it from the other side instead?

I already tried zoning restricted traffic on the side they are not supposed to stand on, but they just do not listen and keep ending up with broken legs and stuff

Other than building a wall on the forbidden side and suspend the construction at the same moment? Nope. the pathfinding and work routine of miners is simply stupid. So often they just run from one side of a room that is supposed to be expanded to the other side, each time only removing one tile before running back... Stupid dwarves.

well that sucks. I am trying to clean the front of my fortress by removing the over-hanging surface from the above Z-Levels (basically so that the front is not a "cavern-bottom" and is soil instead).

The miners are suicidal though because they keep hopping to the side that is about to collapse to do the last little bit. I did try not have the last bit mined out then letting them walk away and re-designating so that they would do it from the good side but they just go to the wrong side again.

Remove a tile at a time to prevent that. Only designate the whole edge. If that is gone, do that again... and again... and again...

or to be on the safe side: use supports and cave-ins.

actually cave-ins are whats going wrong. I WAS setting it up so that there would be one tile left with nothing underneath it so be the anchor for a large swath of land. The idea there being that I had already cut the edges out around in and dug it out below. Then I just mine a single channel tile on that one remaining tile and tada!

The problem I am experiencing is that the dwarf runs to the floating part of the clump that is to be dropped, rather than cutting it from the safe side. I could see building a single wall segment on the spot where they normally would have been though

You don't have to finish the wall. Just order it to be build and then suspend it immediately. They don't like to stand on those construction sides.

Update on this:

Ok so I have observed dwarf behavior and observed something. Whenever a Dwarf performs a task, they will, if they can, performt eh task from the left hand side of the tile. This is true even in mining, which is why a room is typically mined out from the upper left corner.

As for the planned walls idea, that did not work. I had it set up so that there were three planned walls around the spot that needed to be channeled leaving access from only one tile, and the losers STILL moved to the planned wall spot. Luckily there was one more thing I had forgotten to do so it did not cave in and kill them.

edit: Forgot to say, I think I am going to just change to 1-column strip mining on the far outer edge and work in. That will work just fine for what I am going right no with no real danger to any of my dwarfs, though it will take much longer to accomplish.

Yeah I haven't ever had the suspended wall trick work for me in DF2010, for miners. It worked fine in 40d#, and it works now for stuff like furniture placing. (I.e. not standing on the wrong side of a floodgate.) But for mining, doesn't do a damned thing. Traffic restrictions don't work because no amount of pathing penalty will tell them they can't step on their destination.

Your from the left thing mirrors my experience as well. If you set your designations up so that there's always open space on the left, they'll use that if possible.

Overall, it's just a pain to manage safe mining practices. Urist McMiner is a miner because he's too stupid for any job more sophisticated than whacking rocks with a pick.

Dwarves also prefer to work in cardinal directions, not on diagonals.  You can use that to get them to mine/channel/build from a particular direction.  Very handy to know when sealing up the tapped-out vein of coal that ran through the apartment block...  ;)
