A yarny mood
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:46:30 am »

So I've got this dwarf. He's in a fey mood, and he needs yarn. I don't have any- what I do have is 4 baby alpacas (3f1m). It's early summer, he's been in his mood about 5 weeks, the elven caravan came around and didn't have any yarn/wool/wool-producing critters. What can I do to remedy this situation?

Start sealing him in.  Didn't e caravan have any yarn? Perhaps you can order a workshop to shear and spin and hope for the best.  I was able to spin horse hair once, that worked...

Build a wall around him and shut it up tight. If he has any family give them some nice stuff to boost their mood. Hopefully he'll just go missing and no one will know he's dead. Once his family and friends are feeling good about life open up the place and build stick him in a nice tomb. You may have to engrave a slab for him before then to keep a ghost from appearing.

If everyone is estatic already, say because you have a legendary dining hall with a mist generator. Wall him in still, but bury him right after he dies. No need to risk him going off the wall and bashing brains in.

But, argh, he's the leader of the expedition and both the best carpenter & mason I have. I slaughtered a camel to provide leather for him already, have two male horses but the shearing job fails. If a slaughter an alpaca calf, would it leave wool? No, the elf caravan didn't have yarn, wool, nor wool producing creatures. Just rope read, an otter and a skunk. If not for the sunberries, they would have been completely useless.

Couldn't you, I dunno, shear the alpacas?
I hear that butchered wool is bugged.

They're too young, doesn't work. Though I've found I do have a camel hair thread, so if not for this guy going insane ~30 seconds after I start the game, (apparantly he's been in labor a bit longer than I thought), I may have been able to butcher both my horses, spin their hairs into yarn and make a patch of the stuff that way. As it is, I'm in the process of cheating my way to the stuff.

You can't use camel/horse etc hair, those threads won't be weaved into wool. Only yarn will.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
