Regarding the apparent lack of raw adamantine, with stock raws and default worldgen settings, there should be a tube within each 2x2 embark tile region, so any 5x5 embark should have a minimum of 4 tubes and a maximum of 9. In fact, I just generated a new world and did several 5x5 test embarks, and they all fell within that range. If you're getting less adamantine than that, then it's possible you've accidentally modded in another [DEEP_SPECIAL] stone and some of your "deep special tubes" are being made of that instead.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I've not modded anything myself, I'm just running 34.11 with Lazy Newb Pack Advanced from http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0, an image set, with some adjustments to population, and no aquifers. Just now I loaded up "Design New World With Advanced Parameters" and generated a default medium region and did a 5x5 embark. Chose a place that showed deep/shallow metal and flux, zero adamantine. Chose another 6x6 and still nothing. And previously, if you unpaused the game with reveal active, fun would ensue. This is not happening. If this is related or if it has been changed to not trigger by that, I'm not sure.

When I use DFHack to Reveal, and use prospect I'm not seeing any. And, where I suspect a tube might be able to form (I usually see them deep around the magma sea) there are a few black voids of nothing.

This sucks, I was hoping to get started on a new game last night, but here it is a day later and I can't figure out what's going on here.  :'(

Aha, this is your problem. DFhack has been updated to not release the circus on "reveal". To achieve that the candy is not shown on reveal, instead blacked out. These are the blacked tubes you are seeing. So you have candy, you just did not see it. To reveal it you need to use "reveal hell", which will force pause and reveal the circus without unleashing it.

Ugh! All this trouble for nothing. Available animals appears to be bugged, but it's good to have that figured out.

Well, at least I can get started now. Thanks!!

Just use "prospect all" if you want to check for the presence or absence of something.

Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)
