I like alpacas, lots of meat and rather hard for bezerking dorfs to kill.

Goats give wool?

Pigs and sheep. Pigs don't eat, so you can keep them in cages.

THAT IS FKNG CHEATING!! no fun at all!
Nope, it's currently behaving exactly as toady intended.
And how can you cheat in a single-player game? And doesn't sticking pigs in cages stop their breeding?

Chickens, goats, dogs

If you get low on meat and don't want to sacrifice your milk/wool/egg industry, kill a dog. They use no grass and just multiply like crazy.

Grizzlies are nice because WAR GRIZZLY BEAR is just awesome.

In my experience, the challenge in animal farming usually isn't getting enough return-on-investment. Rather, it's not getting too much of it.
With bigger animals they graze pretty quickly in certain biomes -- in my scorching biome they graze like 16 tiles to dirt within about a year.
But even those will, with proper management, produce more meat and bone than your fort is likely to need.

Aside from maybe a handful of animals (can water buffalo's even be kept alive reliably?), I prefer to measure animal bestness on a scale of how much management they require to raise the right amount of animals and/or dispose of the (products of) unwanted offspring.

I think the best animal is chicken at least when you think in food.
Also, It doesn't need a pasture

I leave a breeding pair outside. The rest goes into a cage, does not try to path and thus lets you have lots of animals without draining FPS.

And the answer there is DFHack's autobutcher command.
