I want to be a farmer daddy!
« on: September 23, 2012, 02:12:29 pm »

So, I just started my fortress and I've two cows (one male, one female), two cats and two chicken.
I want to know if I'm going to be able (at some point in the future) to produce milk or meat from my "farm" animals.
If so, I will need some advices

forever dwarf.

You can get meat from all these animals. To butcher them you need a butchers workshop. To milk the cow you need a farmers workshop. You also need dwarfs with the corresponding labors enabled. If you put a nest box in the chicken's pasture you can also collect eggs.

You don't need the pasture, but it can help.

Thanks for the info

What do the animals eat if they're not in a pasture?
Even the cows can be outside of the pasture?

Grass, all a pasture does is keep the animal inside

Some animals like cats, dogs, birds and pigs don't eat at all. Cows and other grazers need to stand on grass or cave moss or they will starve. The pasture is just the zone where you tell them they should be, so you should keep grazers in a pasture with grass.

Or cats in a food stockpile. Or war giant tigers in the entrance. Or mandrils in the trade depot. Whatever floats your Boatmurdered.

The problem is that when I create a Meeting Hall the grazers start to die because they stay inside the fortress all the time

You can also collect fat from animals, then convert that to soap.

You can then build your fortress walls out of soap.

You can also mod things a bit so you can create a giant scale replica of a cow, with fat made from actual cow soap, bone out of blocks, so on. Then, create a minecartshotgun loaded with bricks at the end, and voila, Your cow is now shitting brick. And probably decapitating many a goblin in the way, but I digress.

Pature them on grass, then assign them. Its as simple as that. If its large enough, they'll live.

Once you dig into caverns, you (usually) get spores and moss starts growing on soil/muddied tiles. You can then pasture underground. The upside of this is that invaders will not maul your livestock. The downside is that invaders will not maul your livestock, which sometimes is a good thing as it slows them down.

Plus most animals are formidable fighters, and can kick skulls in.
