newbie questions

Hello dwarf fortress players.

Probably easy answers or i found some bugs.

1) the dwarfes don't build workshops as i ordered them.  I am building a mason's workshop and they build it quick. I am building a jeweler's workshop and they build it as expected.  They don't build mechanic and bowman workshops altough i precicely did order them to do that. They even don't build those workshops on the same squares from which i removed the masonry.
I have masonry,
2) the game always stops when damp stone is located during my mining. How can i deactivate that?  I used (o) (x) to set the job cancelled messages to 0 but it doesn't help.

1) To build workshops, you need a dwarf with the appropriate job. That means to build a mason's workshop, you need a mason. To build a jeweler's workshop, you need a jeweler, for a bowyer's workshop a crossbowmaker and so on. You can enable jobs with the (v) menu - pick a dwarf, press (p) and check the job you want the dwarf to do.

2) To stop the pausing, you'll need to edit the announcement list. Go to your Dwarf Fortress directory, then open data/init/ and then announcements.txt . Now, you have to find DIG_CANCEL_DAMP. In this entry, there is a P for pausing, and an R for recenter. Delete them - the line should look like this after you're done:
Code: [Select]
[DIG_CANCEL_DAMP:A_D:D_D]You could also delete the D_D to stop the messages from showing up in the announcement log, but you'll have to turn (o)-(x) back on to see the result.
Restart DF, and the pausing should be gone. Have fun!

I wonder if the game has become odd.

There's a reason that pausing is there, so be careful if you disable it. However, if you DO do something stupid the pausing probably won't be enough to save you anyways -- it will just alert you so you can watch the horror, technically a better out come than "Hey, wait... how'd everyone get drowned?"
