I was doing good making some steel then all the sudden I can't smelt ANYTIHING. I have a lot of Charcoal, Iron, and Pig Iron. I also have a bunch of ores. It won't let me smelt anything. I am using no mods. I've tried saving and restarting. There is a stockpile beside the smelter with the required materials. Is this a bug or have I over-looked something?

When ihad this problem, i had the wood burning and furnace operating labors confused.

See that they arent.  Make sure you have a furnace operator.

Any error messages?
Do you have any burrows in place or did you do something with stockpile links?

For steel, yes. But OP said he can't smelt anything, so that's not it.

Are your ores forbidden or designated for dumping?

Smelting did work before, and I have a marble stockpile near-by that was fine before. Labor is good; They had been doing great. Then I got an error message saying I can't smelt steel because I do not have fuel. Confused, I checked my stock and in fact did have fuel. Since then I've made more fuel, but nothing has changed. I really don't want to, but is starting a new embark my only solution?

That sounds like something with stockpile settings. Try setting the stockpile with the fuel to give to the smelter. Or make a fuel stockpile next to the smelter.

Thank you XXSockXX assigning the stockpile to the smelter fixed the problem. Now I'm worried about smithing though considering the stockpile is only giving to the smelter.

If smithing doesn't work anymore, try to make separate stockpiles for smelters and forges. With the changes in this version several smaller stockpiles seem to work better sometimes.

Just as an aside, I like to split off all steel production.  Big room, 4 stockpiles, no bins, magma shelters in the middle.  Quadrants of iron, flux, fuel, pig.  Finished steel goes to magma forges. Nearby.  One can then see at a glance how stocks look and whether or not it's time to melt a bunch or ore.

Good plan, I'll just have to modify considering my lack of a magma forge.
