Butchering a whale
« on: April 18, 2010, 06:01:13 am »

I am just curious: Has anyone done it?

How fast does the butcher really carry the whale to a butcher's shop? Putting a rope around it's tail and pulling? Clogging the main hall for months? A whale is 300 times the size of a dwarf!

Or: What size would the terrarium be where my tamed pet whale resides? Is it possible to attach wheels to it?

HI!

Just a few days ago, people had a wonderful time discussing exactly that. I recommend you look at the following thread:

I had two fortresses in DF2010 with whales so far.

In the first, only whale skeletons ended up on the beach for unknown reasons. The first of these skeletons did weigh 41k weight units, which caused a lot of traffic jams in the craftsdwarf's workshop (they were dragging the pile to and from the workshop a lot); the later ones weren't so absurdly heavy anymore.

In the second, a whale must have died on the beach, and he was butchered immediately and flawlessly, before I even noticed it. I don't quite remember the amount of products they got from him, only the 536 pieces of whale meat.

...I was bored with my current fortress (2 years, no attacks and WAY too many defenses.) So I guess I'll try the ocean..

A Giant Sperm Whale, if you can get one, will feed your fortress forever if you butcher it.
