What kind of dwarf are you?  If you are a fish cleaner, wax worker, or some other useless profession, be wary if you are suddenly drafted into the military, because you'll probably die at the first sign of goblins.  One thing I've seen some dwarves do is have "equipment problems"- so not picking up equipment or doing nothing but picking up equipment can at the very least delay your death, and if you're lucky you'll be undrafted.  If you're unlucky, expect to be told to attack the goblin army singlehandedly.  Counteract that by standing around doing nothing.  Your marksdwarf buddies know what they're doing.

A few other tips for new dwarves:
- don't become a noble, they often meet unfortunate accidents
- don't become a weaver - the caverns can be deadly when collecting webs
- don't pick up socks outside the fort, stay in your burrow
- get water from a well inside the fort, not a stream outside of the fort
- pull the lever asap (unless you're a noble)
- don't make too many friends, keep your head down and stay away from the parties - you're life depends on it
