Goblin Queen of Dwarves...
« on: September 11, 2012, 04:30:21 pm »

For some reason our civilization's Queen is a Goblin who specializes in Shearing... I'm wondering how exactly our dwarves came to come under the rule of a goblin.

She exhibits a reign of terror by shaving off their beards if they step out of line!
How horrible!

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Wasn't there a report of an elven king of dwarves? I seem to recall reading about that.

It's probably some loophole in the coding for civilizations choosing their rulers, like humans electing an ass demon as their sheriff. If say, individuals were to become adventurers during worldgen (begin wandering the wilds) then settle in a different settlement (still during worldgen) they would be accepted into the civilization without a second thought.  If their skills are high enough, then these foreigners could then be elected into seats of power.

...or I'm overcomplicating stuff and the Goblin does threaten to shave their beards if they step out of line.

Afaik it's simply a case of your civ having at one point conquered a goblin site, thus absorbing a few of the surviving gobbos into their civ. Then, through some freak chance event one of them got elected queen :S

A goblin settlement, or a settlement including goblins, was conquered at some point by your civ. The royal line died out, and the dwarfified descendants of those goblins were deemed the best choice for the new monarch. The current queen practiced shearing for some reason.

Also has something to do with gobbos and elfs being immortal.  You live long enough, your card will get drawn eventually.  Like the draft.

And considering how many "unfortunate accidents" befall nobles, I'm surprised there aren't any draft dodgers!

Ah, yes... Cacame Awemedinade, the only elf to ever become dwarfy enough to obtain the lasting and wide-spread praise of the DF playerbase.

As for weird Civ leaders, if I remember right there are ways for non-civ races to become rulers, by my guess the Goblin was part of the Civ (somehow) and (showhow) obtained rulership. You see clowns do it sometimes with human civs, by convincing them that they're a god or something. Doubt the goblin did that to your Civ, though.

This is how most people get added to new five.

Shearing. Wait. She has achieved sufficient dwarvenlyness by crafting regal armor from the beards of the slain.

THE EMPRESS OF A THOUSAND BEARDS.

Necromancers are viable leaders too, regardless of whether they pick up thy 'art' before or after being appointed.

Which makes sense, actually. They seem like precisely the sort with the time, power, and reason to climb up the political ladder or just seize their throne.
