Some quick advice for a picture
« on: September 12, 2012, 11:18:44 pm »

I know that this should be in Creative Projects and maybe even under my art thread, but I wanted some quick advice on what I'm doing right and wrong with my drawing. I'm going out on a date tomorrow and they wanted to see my drawings, so I'm rushing to finish this one by tomorrow evening. Any nitpick would be appreciated.

The crocodile isn't finished, but I'm working on it. I mainly wanted to know if I got the wizard right.

The wizard looks great right now, I'll have to remember to check out your art thread more often! Keep in mind I can argue against or for anything and write a paper on it afterward, so even if I point a few flaws out the art is still great. The only things I can see on him that I find out of place:

The shadow on the base of his tail is the exact same shade as the background and made me do a double-take right away. Not a big problem at all, especially not if you're planning on coloring it, but I thought I'd mention it.

This is really detailed in just about every way except for the face. I'm not sure if you're working up some thoughts on the expression or polish on it, but the blankness of the face (and head to some extent) contrasts strongly with the level of detail everywhere else.

Finally I'm a little conflicted about the lighting on the fireball. It makes it look much better, but it also seems to be casting light in one direction when it seems like it should do it uniformly.

I know it's because of the shadows, but change the shade on the tail just slightly. The colour is the same as the background and it makes it look detached from the body.

The tail coming between his legs is kind of messing with me. Like, my brain says that kind of pose the tail should be behind him and off to the side. Artistic license, and all that. But it's the part that stops that action pose from being believable to me. Sort of like an MC.Escher painting.

I finished the image. I posted it on my thread. I added bubbles to make it more obvious that he was moving backwards, changed the background around the tail area, changed the face's lighting slightly, and added more of a flare all around the fireball.

I'll be locking this thread since the picture is done. Thanks to everyone that gave advice.
