Author Topic: Into the slave pits! The only problem... I can't get the slave pits to work...  (Read 1297 times)

Ok, so what I want to do, is dig out a pit area (with water access), toss in a couple of barrels of food and a few hundred logs every year, and every migrant that come here, and have them produce useless crap for all eternity. If they become legendary, they don't have to live in that pit anymore. Every year, a handful of the slaves are chosen randomly, and are sacrificed to the great god/goddess Armok/Kodkod (depending on if i am playing normal DF or KC). There is one problem with all of this: I tried to set this up with a burrow, and burrowed every Slavebold in the slave pit, so my normal cultists could periodically collect the useless crap they produce to sell to the home-warrens. All the slaves constantly bitched about starving despite the fact that the food dump spot is inside their burrow. How exactly do you all recommend i go about creating these slave pits?

I' m a bit puzzled by this phrasing, make sure food is unforbidden. See the log for the reason they cancell eat.

Make some food stockpiles inside the pit?

Doesn't work, they refuse to even stock pile it. I think its being pathed to by the cultbolds to put in the other stockpile

Does they have any pathable access to other sources of food if they wasn't burrowed? I've noticed burrowed dwarves sometimes will claim food outside of their burrows even with plentiful food and drinks within, for some reason, even if the doors are locked. It can happen with doors being unlocked for a moment, too.

If you want slave pit and you're on versions with mining carts, you can make an automatic dumper carts that dumps over into pits so they'll never have access to 'outside' unless you let them specially out.

I've made a few versions to test out concepts, though I don't bother to have a real way out, just sealing them in by bricks :D
I'd make two doors with a lever in middle if I wanted a way to choose who to get out, unlock the door to the pit but lock the one that goes out, profile the lever to that one person you want, set it to repeat toggle and lock the door behind them. Unlock the other door and cancel the toggle order, lock when they gets out.

I'll try the cart dumping thing, assuming that KC is updated for that

Would it be possible to have a dropper system, where in a dwarf/slavebold/good are put on the trapdoor, a lever is pulled, and the goods fall into the pits. To transfer slaves out of the pit, could i have another trapdoor to transfer out the useless crap and legendary slaves (who are now cultbolds)?

I reccomend you automate it with minecarts.

= track
S track stop, set to dump east
. channeled out floor
+ floor and other random crap
s stockpile

Z = 2
s==S.  Route set to draw from feeder stockpile, with food, logs, or whatever, and push east. The minecart hits the stop and dumps its contents into the pit, where...

Z = 1
s++s=S.  the contents lands on the stockpile. This is your slave pit. They can do whatever they do, then load it into the second stockpile. There's then a route that functions like the first. The stuff lands...

Z = 0
s+++  on this stockpile. This is your output back to the fortress proper.

Trapdoor thing's pretty fiddly with how squad stationing order tend to put them just within 2 or 3 tiles of the stationed spot. That two door with a profiled lever's been best method I've found for controlling who gets in or out exactly.

As for the stuffs dumping trapdoor, I don't see why not, it'd be more manual than minecart autodumper, but it's how I used to dump stuffs out of sealed systems when I'm paranoid of things crawling up or still do for atomsmashers. Just use floor hatches, bridges throws things around :D (At least I'm very sure the floor hatches don't ).

I'd still use the minecart autodumper for output and wood input if your version have minecarts, it's pretty no-upkeep system once it's properly set. Food would have to be done manually since it's a bit too easy to accidentally drain the fortress' food into a dumper.

You can also combine the minecart thing with hatches.

=^SH  Just have ^ pressure plate triggered by minecarts and linked to the H hatch. It will have a delay of 100 ticks though, but that will just mean it waits a second before dropping the stuff.
