It would be nice if dwarves were slightly easier to make happy, but I think it's pretty good as it is now. It's kind of like Tetris- if you're good you can keep your dwarves' moods pretty stable for a long time. There might be dips here and there, but with practice you learn to manage. Nevertheless, eventually you'll screw up somewhere and before you know it you're up to your armpits in dead dwarves.

That's a mental image I could have done without. Another decent way to help prevent fortress-wide mood drops is to put a table with a few statues and engavings in their room, and try to keep them busy at all times. Antisocial dwarves are dwarves that couldn't give less of a crap when Urist McMiner falls into the water channel.

Have you ever had the misfortune to not have a shirt? It make you pretty damn upset.

Read this without a shirt.

Though I suppose your point is that I at least own a shirt.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

The homeless people in my street own shirts, for christ's sake.

I think that the positive moods could use a revamp, I mean:
"come on, thats a nice waterfall, but your wifes dead man. You love you wife, been married to her for 80 years, have 9 kids together, doesn't that bother you?"
"I guess so but LOOK AT THAT STATUE, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A STATUE OF SUCH QUALITY?!?"
"Yes, yes, I saw it yesterday"
