I think merchants can die of thirst once they go insane. At any rate, I've had insane merchants die on me while confined.

Arm your dwarfs with wooden shields and bludgeon him into the traps! If he is worthy, he will live.

Necrobearded could not be caught by the traps, even in his insane state, even after a lowly Clerk was told to bash him in with the elves' own training sword.

So he fought, and fought, and fought, until my Clerk was a Skilled Swordsdwarf and Necrobearded... was dead.

He will be buried with dwarven honours, in a nickel coffin, in the deep magma sea. Goodbye, Necrobearded. You were so close.

A valiant effort. I would have suggested using a 1Z supported ceiling to knock him unconcious onto a cagetrap, but...

He's still an elf. Would it be worth the effort?
