Getting water across the chasm

How, exactly, do you use the aquaduct to get water across the chasm?  I tried the most obvious way: built an aquaduct across the chasm, opened it to the left and right, then put a channel on each side and had the water run through the middle.  Unfortunately, this simply caused the water to fall into the chasm.  I'm stumped as to how to actually use the aquaduct.

That should work, but it's quite possible it stopped working at some point.  I can take a stab at it.
