I use the phoebus tileset all the time, because I started learning with tilesets and everything is much clearer and easier to see. Of course DF is perfectly playable without them, but they do enhance the game.

Burrows are a great way to control your dwarves, and stop them dying or not doing their job and etc. To keep them safe or in their workshop spaces much better.

I always find the caverns, but maybe your just unlucky with that. I dig straight down (in the middle I guess) and there seem to be them always on the way to magma.

I do the same thing with stairs and my fortress. However from a defense point, its best to at least have some corridors (one square wide) so you can easily put traps, doors or quickly wall up an area to stop off a siege etc.

--------
I also use only Dwarf Therapist because of the ease of managing my dwarves (In a 100+ dwarf fort turning everyone to masons or etc easily is so less stressful. I also use Soundsense a great mod which reads the gamelog.txt file and puts sounds to what is happening (Needs to be updated when you first get it usually, takes awhile and is about 250mb+).

But Modded DFs add alot of replay value to DF. DF is fine vanilla style, however sometimes you want more options, and more stuff to play around with. I practically always play Vanilla however.

Reading these forums, I notice not many people play DF the way I do, so I was just wondering.

Am I the only one that uses no mods, including tilesets?
Am I the only one who doesn't use burrows?
Am I the only one who struggles to find caverns? I've managed to reach the magma see before without finding a cavern and I've only found one cavern in all the time I've played DF.
Am I the only one who doesn't use strange and intricate stair systems and just has a simple layout fitting everything on 3 or 4 floors all connected through 1 system of stairs and corridors, I know that last one isn't very well explained.

Just curious, as everyone else seems to have all this, I mainly don't use burrows because I don't understand them.
YEs, at least when it come to tile sets, I originally used no tile sets, but now I use phobious.
No.
Yes.
Kinda, I use only one or two main staircases typically, but my fortresses are very vertical, spanning many z-levels.

Question of my own: Am I the only person who likes microcline?

I use microcline to line all of my waterworks. I love the effect.

Also I use a tileset that makes tiles square and corners round, nothing else. I hate it when people post screenshots from graphics packs; I just plain can't understand what's going on in them.

Personally I don't use tilesets at all. I like the ascii feel of it.

On 99% of my games I don't use any mods. I have used prospector in the past when I was having a lot of trouble finding enough metals. But that was only on a couple of forts. I might again if I am looking for some specific site specs, but its more fun without the foreknowledge.

As for burrows, I hardly ever use them. I have a few setups for new arrivals. Sort of a check-in station. Aside from that I have little to no use for them.

I've only missed caverns once before. In general I manage to stumble onto them.

For stairs my most recent fortresses have stairs:

But sometimes I do go extravagant with a huge chasm to the depths of the fortress. It can be handy to have a huge flush chamber. If you have a river you can use water to take care of any invaders while you work out how to get your magma up there.

And to the one who likes microline: Its ok, but I wouldn't build my fortress walls out of it.

I, for one, am with you on almost all of the above.
My default fortress design just has a 1x2 or 1x3 staircase running froim bottom to depot level and another going up to the farms. (My depot is usually in one of the top stone layers.)
I don't use burrows except for military emergencies when I need to tell the dorfs to stay indoors.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I can't stand to use Tilesets. It just doesn't look right after using ASCII all this time.
Any mods I have, I home brew.
Caverns? I hit them once. Not that I ever dig that deep.
I have no idea how burrows operate, so I stay away.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

1. No.
2. Possibly, burrows are tricky to understand in terms of mechanics, but once you start using them you get the hang of it (well I did anyway).
3. Possibly: I've always managed to hit caverns on my way down to the magma sea.
4. No, I dig a 3x3 staircase and fit everything around that, until I hit a cavern. Then I reroute the staircase but that's about it.

You're not the only one that doesn't use burrows. I only make like two and tie them into alerts. That's it.
I don't go all technical with them.

I only use two burrows. One contains the depot to ensure the arrival of goods to in a timely fashion.

The other is a happiness burrow, containing sad-dwarves to an area with very high value furniture, statues, and a water fall. At current it's also a party zone. Usually it's a tower, or suspended turret which can be dropped in case of berserking.

Fairly useful.
