while we're semi-on-topic of top dwellings.

Is it possible to limit the amount of under ground Z layers to around 20 or less? this would allow me to use a massive flat area without lag for some mega projects.  ;)

Well you could either terraform to the best of your abilities or just embark on a flat plain. More z levels is both good, because building materials and bad because more crap to track.

And on the apes thing they did use adobe but that may have been a case of it was the available building material.

Please re-read, without lag.

having 200 unused z levels when you have a maximum sized map will decimate most computers.

I don't know of any, pardon this this is directed at no one, I don't know of any idiot who'd try to use a max sized map. At least i've never heard of someone doing so. And that seemed a little hostile. Probably wasn't, but I tend to interrprete things that way. if it wasn't, my appologies.  :(

I've tried with my Mega-Beast of my PC "OH GAWD THE LAG!" 16x16 embark. hehe Lag no matter what :P due to the fact you have at least 7+ Roaming animal groups and SOOO much to track. I might try again once I play with simple materials, see how that goes.

Gave that bitch some lizardmen.  Bitches love lizardmen.  Mine don't use wood, but if you need graphics, I can do that.
