I actually almost never brew alcohol. My dwarves drink out of wells constantly. Slows things down, but it makes life easier when I don't really have to worry about alcohol anymore. Basically, all my forts are sober forts.

Maybe I just suck then.  :-[

Maybe my first fort after a year and a half away from DF should have had it's challenge rating set a little bit lower.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

I do brew alcohol occasionally to cheer them up though, so I'm not 100% sober, just sober by default. That was quite a while ago now though, when one well would never drain the water below it. Does it drain the water now if it's not in an an aquifer or a river?
