RTS games with real-time editors
« on: August 19, 2012, 08:55:55 am »

I'm looking for those RTS games with simple and fun editors. The ones where you just click and boom, theres a soldier. And you can just have a huge war without setting anything up or having to wait through load times for "testing". Prime examples are the Cossacks and American Conquest series. I'm looking for more games with similiar editors. Who can help me?

I've made custom maps and battles in Age of Empires and Rise of Nations. Rise of Nations was especially fun: I recreated both Omaha Beach and Vietnam (as closely as I could). Both of which went horribly for the Americans this time around, or at least more horribly. Not sure if that's exactly what you're asking for, but I think it is.

Yeah, Age of Empires is a good example.

Stronghold 1 has that sort of editor.

I believe we're talking about full scale colonisation here.  You don't just leave all your shit in the van when you move house.

Worth noting that AoE doesn't have a "real time" editor.  You can create a scenario, then load it, but you can't edit it in-game.

In Cortex Command all you have to do is call in rockets full of troops. http://www.datarealms.com/

Also, there is a Real Time Editor mod for Arma II, which has RTS elements with the "Warfare Module." http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7264

Age of Mythology's editor was real time (to the extent that you had to be careful to avoid units starting the fight the instant you spawn them) and closer to what you describe than AoE's was.

I'm very familiar with the AoE series. I've played all of them but the first. Those aren't the editors I was talking about; you place all of the units and then you have to test them. You then have to go through an annoying loading screen. If any of you have played Cossacks or the American Conquest games, you would perfectly know what i'm talking about.

Indeed. I don't remember whether you can issue orders to units placed in-editor, but it's otherwise identical to the main game. Place two armies a distance apart, then set a few units in the middle. One army rushes forth to kill the units -> sees the other army -> carnage. Then throw down a few more units to support the losing side! The fact that "units" includes both human foot soldiers and mythological beings is just icing on the cake.

Plus, once you get bored of the editor, you'll hopefully realize that the game itself is awesome:)

I was going to mention cossacks, american conquest and stronghold but they were mentioned already.
I think Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns / Kohan: Ahriman's Gift had something similar but I can't really remember.

Yeah, you can. You have to press Esc to get out of the unit-placing menu first though, and you can only control units that are the same color as the ones you had last selected. So if you put some blue units for player 1 then some red units for player 2, you have to switch back to placing stuff for player 1 or else you can only command the red guys.
