So by purest form you mean you don't mod your INI files to suite your personal tastes, leaving everything in the game as toady as written it?

edit: And i feel so sorry for you banging your head against the wall assigning dwarves their jobs in the horrible, horrible user interface. I used to play it unmodded as well, before all the 3rd party programs came out to make me not rage stop playing the game because of the next wave of 30 migrants that just came and having to reassign all of their skills

edit 2: So a macro that you write isnt a 3rd party program... interesting...

Well I don't do much headbanging, since I just assign their jobs one by one as the enter the screen. I also name every single one of my Dwarves individually and regularly juggle jobs between the separate industries. Oh and I've never used Therapist or any of those third party nonsense!
Just saying, some of us love that UI. It helps to be able to mash buttons quickly too :P

If you have never tried them how can you judge if they are good or nonsense?

edit: and before we argue the horrible user interface issue more, Toady and threetoe have said as much as i have. Here is one quote.

More specifically, what problems did you have before learning the ropes of the game?  We figure we are losing 90% of the players because of the UI and other barriers, and that doesn’t even count the ones scared away by the ASCII graphics.  Now, this doesn’t mean we are about abandon the rest of the game to start the presentation arc.  It is just as important to have endless monster attacks from the underground, and challenging sieges.

While you might enjoy it, it doesn't change the fact that its bad in a general sense.

Simple, I don't judge them!
The whole thing spruced up from you judging DF by its third party tools, whereas I was saying the UI doesn't affect the quality of the game. I still don't think the UI is bad :P

while fun right now

....that third party programs are almost required to play.
Contrary to popular belief, there are those amongst us who play DF in its purest, macro inducing sense. Third party programs are a meh.
Me, for instance. I don't even use macros.

I don't use anything either. Once I tried Therapist and it was too slow having to go back and forth :P

Do you use graphical tilesets?
Can you even READ them at this point? I can't. It's like expecting the green symbols and just seeing little, crude drawings of a blonde, a brunette, a redhead, whatever.

EDIT: Fixed reference.

I know what you mean, somehow it's easy to tell the difference between a g (run), g (tough food) and a g (mountains are fun), but the sprites... Nope, can't tell them apart. Maybe it's just down to experience though? Someone who used one tileset exclusively over another'd be able to tell what each sprite is easily I guess.
