23a is the last of the 2D versions. 40d is the last of the older 3D versions, which had a different underground structure and simpler military and healthcare systems.

The main difference between the 2D version and the 3D versions is the amount of control you have over the fortress and the terrain itself. Once you've played .34 for a bit, go and play 2D and see for yourself.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Yes, hence "2D".

...I thought that was 'the obvious'. What obvious thing were you thinking of?

The primary deal is that it was always like embarking on the side of a mountain over a plain and being confined to ground level z.  A chunk of flat ground left side, a wall, underground right.  Further right equated to 'deeper' as modern versions have it, better metals, underground features, fun and so on.

If you've ever read the saga of Boatmurdered, then you should know that it was played in one of the older 2D versions.

Back then, every fortress covered one single biome (which never ran out of wildlife) and you embarked against a totally flat cliff face. As you dug to the right, you found the Cave River (from which frogmen and lizardmen would periodically attack), then the Chasm (into which you could dump garbage, which would trigger attacks from creatures such as Antmen and Trolls), then the Magma Flow (where you had to build all of your magma workshops, exposing them to Fire Imps, Fire Men, or Magma Men), then the Glowing Pits (from which you'd get a group of 10 Demons), then the Adamantine (which, once you started mining it, would eventually cause an Instant Game Over in the form of the "too deep" ending).

No burrows, no activity zones (Stone stockpiles were something you actually had to use), no forbidding items, and lots of nobles. It was a totally different game, though it also had its share of annoying bugs (a decent number of which I have personally fixed - see here for patch info).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The hating of nobles started there, I'm sure

Lots of nobles who did no work whatsoever. Nobles in the current version aren't supposed to do normal jobs, but the tag that controls this is broken, so you can give your duchess a new career in dyeing instead of the usual.
