Looney Toons trap
« on: August 18, 2012, 03:17:43 pm »

So I want to build some Looney Toons traps, dropping anvils on a hallway of invaders. Maybe boulders, too. But mainly anvils.

I can't seem to find the answer to this- what's most important to assure the baddies get consistently squashed?
-Height of drop (in z-levels I mean)?
-Weight of object (I hope not, because I'm going with anvils regardless)
-Number of objects dropped?

Thanks, guys!

Height, I would have to guess. Weight isn't terribly important right now. Numbers could be important, but it really depends on how overkill you want it.

Really, from a height of 10 z-levels, you should see a large number of crippled goblins. I dont know too much about it though. There should be some science on dropping objects, all I know about is landing dwarfs.

Number of anvils, because silk socks dropped 1z can be lethal, but heavier objects dropped from higher up are still survivable.

CAN be lethal. A kitten CAN be lethal to a dragon, with a lucky blow to the head or causing an infection or something.

GreatWyrm..."Can" as in, "Is likely to be" falling object physics are weird in this release. Clothing from one Z level seems to hit about as hard as a stone fall trap.

The kitten probably can't kill the dragon on purpose. But if you drop said kitten on the dragon, it has a shot...

Stonefall traps weren't very deadly last time I checked. Also, I've had dwarvers survive things falling on them (most notably, a minecart full of logs), so it's obviously not always fatal.

Time to mod in a [PENETRATION.....] tag for kittens to maximise their deadliness.

I've had the ragged remains of a sock fall 1 z-level from a deconstructed staircase onto a weaponsmith and bruise him through normal clothing.

someone posted recently that 34.11 stonefall traps are way deadlier than they used to be in earlier versions due to the change in mass calculations for the falling damage.

Personally, for the OPs question, I'd go with large numbers of objects from 3 to 5 z to ensure maximum pain, and probable death.  Armed cripples are much easier to kill than even unarmed but healthy opponents.

Wasn't falling damage slightly nerfed after 34.10 because of miners always injuring themselves when digging channels into rock and people crippling themselves by removing construction?

It's not back to the level it was prior to addition of minecarts, but it has been toned down a bit I think.

Using 34.11 with the masterwork mod I had a terrible accident where I channeled beside a garbage dump. By the time I realized that my dwarfs were throwing slade bars in the channeled tile, I'd already lost 3 miners. That was only one Z level, but those bars are insanely heavy.

Bruise=/=Death. If this were true, I'd have died hundreds of times over without even realizing it!

You've been bruised by the ragged remains of a sock?

Harsh.
