How to melt ice?
« on: August 16, 2012, 04:38:26 pm »

My recent maps have all been winter maps with frozen rivers/puddles. First one everyone died of thirst, second too.

I'm trying to figure how to melt ice to make it drinkable. I tried mining it, channeling it. I also tried this : http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/40d:Ice but no success ( old build so didn't expect it to work ).

Also, I don't currently have access to magma so that is not an option.

Dig down and get water from the caverns. Without magma there is no way to melt ice that results in drinkable water.

Alternatively brew more drinks, because what sort of dwarf drinks water (Ugh!).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

While I'm not usually one to advertise my own mods, I've actually created a little something specifically for this sort of situation (until Toady gets around to it on his own; I recall him mentioning that he wants to include various ways to collect water, from rain barrels to proper ice melting, but that's not exactly a high priority right now).

Dragons. See if this works. If not, you can re-use those dragons on goblins, so it's win-win.

Water which is underground does not freeze.  Digging an underground cistern and filling it from a pond/stream before winter is a way to ensure a water supply.

I recently played on a glacier, and got water by caving ice walls down into the stone layers.
