1. Dwarves who are holding shields will use them for bashing, in the same way that they'd use a weapon for attacking.

2. Dwarves who are in need of diagnosis will not spar.

Going on a bit of a tangent here, when exactly do dwarves need diagnosis, other than injuries?

So from what I've read here, the only reliable way to get dwarves to kick more often than not is to disarm them. I'm thinking steel or adamantine armor on everything except for hands and/or arms and sending them into traps full of glass serrated discs. Glass, being entirely crappy against armor, should in theory dismember only the exposed appendages. Plenty of cloaks are advised. Also, sorry if this is parroting someone else's post, I'm not checking.
