Syrup cooking without fly swarms?
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:09:01 pm »

For a while, I'd given up on dwarven syrup due to the solid food preference bug.  Then Sphalerite discovered the workaround where dwarven syrup is the only food product allowed in barrels, which forces cooks to mix it into meals.  This has worked like a charm, giving me stacks of dwarven syrup roast in excess of 12k each.  However, it seems that vermin are a bit more abundant in the current release, especially flies.  Unlike other vermin, cats can't catch them, leading to swarms in the kitchen area.  My dwarves are happy, but they're still taking mood hits from all the flies.

I'd like to cover all the food piles up to get rid of the flies, but I'd also like to continue cooking syrup if possible.   I've tried arranging things by proximity, but my cook still travels far and wide for solid ingredients in containers, while ignoring the syrup right next to the kitchen.  Have there been any new workarounds/innovations where syrup is included in meals, while still allowing all items to be in pots/barrels?

The flies are probably attracted by food. Try using cats.

...Huh. I never noticed-cats seemed to keep vermin away from stockpiles for me.
Try...toads?

What makes you think toads would have any effect on the quantity of flies?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Toads eat flies. It was a joke. I do that sometimes.

How DARE YOU!! You know this is bay12, no laughing, horseplaying, or fun is allowed. Most of all, NO JOKING!!! Only !!SCIENCE!! and !!FUN!!

OP: Well the wiki states that if you have enough barrels and bags to keep food stored in, you can avoid flies, so more Food Barrel (Acacia Barrel)'s or [rock pot]'s would be my only suggestion.
