Can't encrust with the same type. Exceptions?

I had tons of dacite rock crafts and dacite cabochons.  When I tried to encrust the dacite crafts, the gem setter refused and instead added the cabochons to other crafted items, like ropes.  I then created some hornblende cabochons, and the dacite crafts were encrusted just fine.  It appears that rock crafts cannot be encrusted with cabochons of the same type, which I suppose makes sense.  Are there any exceptions to this?

Not that  I know of, no. Also you can only encrust something with one gem of that type. No planepacked limestone statues hanging with several hundred thousand rings of marble.
