Cleaning surface buildings
« on: August 10, 2012, 08:14:24 am »

I am trying to build an above ground village. I built some buildings but the dwarfs leave all of their trash on the floor. It is getting very dirty in there. They don't haul the trash to refuse stocpile. Even dumping doesn't work. How can I clean it?

Dwarves normally ignore surface/outside refuse.  Change it with o->r->o (Orders, Refuse, gather refuse Outside) this will make them pick up refuse from outside and put it in the stockpile.  Press 'v' in that same menu if you also want them to pick up outdoor vermin remains.  Hope this helps :)

It's a default option that rubbish marked to be dumped is not treated as such, when outside... Delve around a little under the Options screen.  I think that's probably what you want.  There are other defaults in there that you might want to switch on (or off), but there are generally sensible reasons for being what they are so remember that you changed them, so you can switch them back as necessary... ;)

[Ninjaed, but latter but of advice still relevant.)

Thanks. It worked but now they are collecting every piece of refuse from whole map. But it is better than nothing. Thanks again.

Yup, thus why there were sensible reasons for the default being the default. ;)

(You could, however, mass-(d)esignate (b)locks to be (f)orbidden, across the landscape arrayed outside of the area that you want the litter picked up in, or whatever the keys are again...  Or mass-forbid from corner to corner (and across Z-levels, if you have rolling terrain) and then reverse that for the area that you want not to be forbidden, although that might disrupt current haulings/object-usages that you temporarily forbid from being touched and then allowed again.)

The proper way to do this would be to create a burrow that encompasses your surface buildings (and the surroundings) add that burrow to your default civilian alert state. Of course, it's my recollection that there are bugs that cause dwarves to still try to haul stuff that's outside their restricted burrows, resulting in lots of job cancellation spam.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
