Another way to access volcanic magma!
« on: August 10, 2012, 05:20:08 am »

So, I for one have been frustrated with trying to get magma out of volcanic tube halfway-down. With no way to get out quick enough, my miners often die.

On DFWiki there are a few helpful articles to try and prevent this. But most seemed a bit complicated.

Then it struck me, floor grates:

1: Make a reservoir one Z level under where you plan to breach the magma tube
2: Ensure that you have a 1 tile wide corridor reaching the place you wish to breach
3: Channel out one of the tiles in the corridor
4: Replace hole with magma-safe floor grate
5: Build magma-safe door on opposite to the tube.
6: Breach the tube
7: ?
8: Profit!

To ensure that the magma is controlled at the end of the process install floodgates wired to a lever in the reservoir.

Here is my setup:

|D.......#...+...    Z1
MMMMM0MMMX   Z0

| is the breach
D is miner
. is one tile wide corridor
# is Floor grate
+  is Door
M is Reservoir
0 is where the magma will flow in
X is the flood gate

You're still trying to outrun magma when you don't have to.  Worse, you're inviting a magma flood when anything that can destroy doors and floodgates turns up.

Create a pressure trap in the tunnel and don't use a proficient miner to breach the vent.

True on both accounts. But when I embark onto volcanoes it's simpler to mine at the base of the volcano than to attempt to channel it out at the top. And as long as the grate is close to where the dorf mines through, he should be fine (my miners were). Its also a lot safer if multiple floor grate are used. The only problem is that the true egress of magma into the fortress will be at the reservoir.

And yes, building destroyers. But then I could just put fortifications in the reservoir / build a wall after the door.

Create a pressure trap in the tunnel and don't use a proficient miner to breach the vent.

I thought magma wasn't effected by pressure?
If it is, then how would I do that?

You need this.  You can breach as deep as you want, as long as the level below the breach is solid enough to get a miner into it.  Do it correctly and there is no running and no risk involved.  And it's really not very complicated, it's just the description that seems that way.  Do it successfully just once, and it's obvious.
