How to find shops?
« on: August 25, 2012, 02:32:04 pm »

So i want to go shopping in adventure mode, just to see what there is to buy and how it works, currently with a dwarf so won't be much of interest, seeing i can't use the armor.

I've heard some stuff from the wiki, but not a lot of info there. Can't find anything which remotely resembles a shop except for houses.

Any hints, am i even looking in the right places?
I've checked ~4 human settlements and inside 2 walled capitals. Haven't seen any shopkeepers or items "on display" or any sign posts outside houses.

Here's a few screenshots, should i expect to find them anywhere near any of those?

or do i just need to look at more settlements as they don't appear in very many of them or? i'm checking human settlements just to clarify, seeing i'm pretty sure no shops for other races.

I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

Shops and markets only appear in towns, not hamlets. I think towns are # on the world map.

i'm using a graphic pack so i'll probably get something else, thanks for the input though, possibly where i've gone wrong.

They won't appear in walled "capital" areas then (screenshot 1)? as there doesn't appear to be enough room in them anyway.

I'll have a better look another time, just got owned by trying to sleep in the wrong area, 5 kobolds attack then followed by about 8 weasel men or something ridiculous and just got swamped. I'll try being a human next time for the equipment. Using a bow sounds interesting, get some ammo from kobolds too. Throw stuff if i'm out of ammo, or just a proper thrower.

Any other tips for finding shops? perhaps a screenshot of a "town" and a market area? (preferably not ascii screenshots, would need annotations as i've used graphic packs so far, so I am unfamiliar with ascii symbols)

Shops will look like normal houses, but have signs outside. You can also see them on the fast travel screen.
And no, the "capitals" are just fortresses where nobles live, protected by soldiers which you might be able to recruit.

Capitals are usually large cities, possibly with an outer wall and almost always with an inner keep. The lawgiver of the civilization might live there, but I've seen them live in fortresses off in the hinterlands as well.

As Intro1927 says, shops appear on the fast travel screen (your third screenshot) when they are nearby. Pressing [m] while on that screen cycles the second display between two maps and a list of the buildings in your current 3x3 area. The symbols shown on the list will correspond to the symbols displayed on the signs outside shops.
