Sewer revolution!
« on: August 09, 2012, 03:01:13 pm »

So, I accidentally trapped a couple of goblin mounts in my "sewers" (a pool of water for all sorts of purposes, this time water trap cistern). They happily lived there for three years, cave crocs, giant olms, giant toads and giant rats living in peace and harmony. I couldn't lure them out and my dwarves refused to swim there, so I just let them be. Now the giant rat gave birth, and at first I ignored this pretty much. Then I looked into my combat log and there were entries of giant rat children and cave crocodiles. I expected to see little rat heads torn off, but instead the rats were winning. The croc only sometimes attacked, just bruising them a bit, while the rat kids tore it's skin and muscles. Now they're playing tag and filling the pool with blood. Has anything like  this happened to you?

Dwarves? Refusing to swim?
I can safely say that's never happened to me. :P

I've had sea lamprey in my primary cistern before-- Don't know how the hell it got through two fortifications and four wall grates though.
Only problem was, it was the cistern that flooded my farm-- it also fed my well, so I was trying to flush it through into the well cistern so my farmers didn't loose a hand or something.

Yeah, when I ordered my dwarves to kill them, they just ran to their barracks and started sparring. The rat kids killed the cave croc. They are marked as "hostile" instead of "invader", the other animals in the pool ignore them completely until they get attacked. A bug?

The other rat child got killed finally. It tore off an olm's toe and made it angry enough to bite it's lower body off or something.

I'd have loved to see some screenshots of that setup!

Hmm, well if the mounts gave birth it's possible the kids would be spawned with the hostile tag like regular wildlife instead of the invader tag.  AFAIK most invaders aren't hostile to wildlife... otherwise every siege would consist of the goblins chasing squirrels around outside your fort all day.  Hostile wildlife WILL attack invaders though.  Kinda surprised the kids didn't immediately attack the mom because of this.  Almost like a siege mount loyalty cascade ;p

The mounts give birth to children that are not "friendly" by default to the goblins.  I had a mix of goblins and mounts dumped in a pit and one was periodically giving birth to children that immediately started fighting with the other mounts and the goblins held there.   I just let the goblins sit there in their self-created pool of miasma.

The last rat child got ripped apart by it's mother. The mounts didn't actively fight against the rat children, only counterstriking.
