F# keys only do multimedia functions?
« on: August 07, 2012, 09:58:58 pm »

Well, whenever I press an F# key, it only does some function like brightening the screen, and I have to use the "fn" key to get them do do what I want.
Is there any way to invert that, so when I hold down fn, it does multimedia crap, and does the normal functions any other time?

I'm on Vista.

Get a usb keyboard. Use your laptop for multimedia, use the keyboard for anything else Function key-based.

My keyboard has an F Lock key on it; which probably means you can do one of three things:
1. Buy a keyboard just for the F Lock
2. Figure out a script/program to emulate a keypress of an F Lock key
3. If for whatever reason the above don't work, figure out a script to invert whether the fn key is down (if fn keypress detected, remove from input stream, else insert fn keypress into input stream; that sorta thing)
It looks like there are plenty of resources on line with a variety of ways to attempt #2, and that's probably the best option.

My laptop has a Fn lock function; iirc it's Fn+F11 or F10. It reverses the function, so that Fn+F1 becomes Help rather than Lock. (mine's a Toshiba Satellite).

See if you have an Fn-Lock key on and you don't know it. Consider physically cleaning your Fn key.

Your laptop might have it set to it by default. Try looking in the BIOS, there was an option there for mine.

IIRC this is the correct advice for dealing with the problem.  Reboot your computer, bring up the BIOS options and check for Fn key options under System Configuration.

This is what worked in my case. Here is a link with more specific instructions for the BIOS setting: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02035108
