I actually dislike the idea of civ races like dwarves and humans being capable of magic. I think much of the unique feel of DF comes from being in a fantastic realm with all the fire-breathing dragons and pantheons and demons, but missing the wizards blowing smoke rings and knockin on little people's doors at five in the morning.

Damn wizarding Jehovah's witnesses.

As a JW, and a huge Tolkien fan I whole-heartedly approve of this joke.

I happen to think fireball throwing dwarfs are too silly to enjoy... unless the set a cat on fire and tossed it.

Magic has been OP in almost every game I encounter it.  An out of shape human is called lunch to a predator, no matter how smart.  Being intellecual gives the advantage of science, and forethought.

Dwarves being able to ride mounts into battle.  I remember reading somewhere that this was insanely difficult to implement due to combat vs. mount speed... but can't the same solution used for mounted goblins, elves, and humans be used for dwarves?  I want war grizzly and (once the pasture starvation is fixed) war elephant mounts!

At the moment i would like many little things of which like separate axes into woodcutter (tool) and battle (weapon) axes, tools required for more skills like hammers for smiths, saws for carpenter etc,
crop yield dependent on things like soil and irrigation than dwarf skill and some other. The first two i think could be easily modded but i would like Toady to do it to get the "official recognition" feeling.
Also replace current elves with stereotypical high elves seen in other works, current ones are too primitive (wood swords? really?).

Well, most of the gameplay stuff that I want pertains to the player directly influencing the political sphere in meaningful ways, and is already planned. The thing I most want that Toady doesn't seem incline to work on any time soon is full tileset support. Every thing able to be represented by its own tile. And to make this more unreasonable, it would be cool if it were possible to dynamically add extra sprites for variant versions of items based on material and quality. And while we're at it, it would be cool if Baughn came back and did all those magical things he was considering at one point or another.

Toady has said (in one of the DF Talks, if I remember correctly) that he doesn't want fireball-throwing soldier mages. You should expect wizards to be more like the current necromancers; tower-dwellers who spend most of their time reading and writing.
