As it stands in legends mode, it's hard to get a quick feel for the world, and even less to have an idea of what the average inhabitant knows about the world, particularly when you turn off reveal all history. I would love for an option to get a quick rundown of the worlds history, preferably in the fantasy style though who knows how much coding that will take (maybe not that much, actually) when searching legends mode with everything revealed, and receiving the same for dwarf fortress mode but based and biased depending on your civilizations viewpoint, or more interestingly what your group of dwarfs know of their history, with adventurer mode being further affected by your locality and starting power and influence, e.g a peasant knowing barely anything besides the bare minimum, affected somewhat by their starting skills such as the forthcoming social ones and reading.

I don't expect this anytime soon, but i have heard it mentioned that toady intends to give you a better idea of your starting town and surroundings in adventurer mode so perhaps this is not too far fetched.

I agree with that. About a year ago, I suggested an Overview mode that could complement Legends mode which takes a similar direction as your suggestion, though I guess that topic never got much attention.

Thumbs up. It should come up with a big UI overhaul which is already being planned IIRC.

Meanwhile, there are other tools like legends viewer or world viewer to do that for you. The map gives a pretty good visualization.
