Geneforge?
« on: November 22, 2011, 06:25:39 pm »

Was browsing the Steam store just now, and something called the Geneforge Saga caught my eye.

Quote from: Steam Page
Geneforge is an Indie fantasy role-playing game, the first game in the five-part Geneforge Saga. It features an enormous world, the ability to create your own army of lethal, totally obedient creatures, and a cunning enemy AI with foes who can go on patrols, stalk you, and run for help.

Geneforge has a huge and open storyline. You have the freedom to choose your own path and decide how the story will turn out. You can fight the evil overlord or you can join him. You can help the peasants or you can torment them. You can be the bold hero or you can just try to get away. No matter what you choose, Geneforge offers an enormous adventure with plenty of replay value.

Anyone know anything about this game? Anyone recommend it? I don't mind primitive graphics, as long as the gameplay is good.

Yes, I'd totally recommend them. They are good games, though that description of the AI doesn't really fit the first game as much as the rest of them.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

It's a solid but not particularly remarkable old school RPG. I don't know if you ever played the old Avernum/Exile games? It's by the same developer, and has some resemblance (some inventory icons are the same, for one). It's definitely an indie game with all that entails, but all five games for $20 isn't a bad price if you like old school style RPGs. If you're unsure what you'd be getting, I suggest checking out some videos on Youtube.

All five for $20's pretty decent. As others have said, Geneforge is a pretty solid series, if not a zomg-must-buy-ohgods thing. The geneforge games particularly drop the moral hammer pretty hard, from what I remember, if that'd interest you. Plot's fairly interesting. Combat, etc, is pretty smooth for a turn-based RPG. Graphics aren't bad -- fairly solid, for what they are, actually.

You can check out the demos here, for all of 'em. Just scroll down a bit to the geneforge stuff.

I found all 5 games absolutely amazing. Fun gameplay, great plot, also fairly open ended.

I would recommend the older games that Spiderweb Software makes. I spent many hours playing Avernum and Exile on a Mac IISi.

I still play Exile III every so often. They're a lot of fun, and I enjoy the 2d graphics more then the pseudo-3d of Avernum.

Whaaat, seriously? $20?

I played the hell out of Exile 2 back in the day and always wanted to try the Geneforge series but was turned off by the fact they were $20 each. :/

I agree that the 2D presentation was better than the 3D though.
In fact, long shot here...

Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

didnt want to start a new thread...

I just got the series from IndieRoyale. Should I play through from the first game? I am the type that might lose interest and I want to get to the goodness, good UI, good story, good gameplay in general.

Can I skip ahead or is starting from the first worth it?

^ My recommendation is the exact same as this.

I liked the concept, but the controls were starting to give me carpal tunnel syndrome after about two hours of play. This was because of the cumulative effect of a lot of minor control grievances that just add up. Things like being forced to mouse over the X to close the large amounts of menus, clicking being the only option for movement. An excessive amount of clicking for combat. Your character deselecting himself occasionally, requiring you to click on the character model, etc. etc. etc.

If the controls were a lot smoother my recommendation would probably be more glowing. Unfortunately, I couldn't even bring myself to continue past the first two hours of the first game because of it.
