Well, you removed some ground and the grass was perfectly able to grow there. What's the problem?

If sun can reach the spot, and it's soil (sands including ), then grass will grow on it.

What's the surprise? is the rest of the biome pretty dead?

Okay, that's odd. Not much of a problem though. Put grazers on it.

I'd not be surprised if the way Toady implement vegetations, that it's only affected by pre-set tiles, like surface, and when you digs that off, it set off new process using current biome information :D

Though I've never really tried anything with desert and other wastelands, it's probably an oddity of implementation.

Water 3 or less levels deep are pathable for dwarves, IIRC.

Sounds like map edge of river or edge of waterfall, but they'd be pushed over from pressure gradient if it was waterfall.

It's a bug I've noticed from way back in .31, it probably existed before that too. Basically channeling away tiles causes grass to grow on them regardless of the surroundings if the tiles are sand/loam/clay. You can make pastures in deserts this way!
