The recordkeeper and broker blues
« on: July 26, 2012, 03:27:34 pm »

At the moment, I have no one in my fort with either any recordkeeping or appraiser skills.  The doofus I made my new book keeper has been in office forever and still has no skill.

Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Set your bookkeeper to highest precision and give him an office.

Not much you can do, other than let him skill up. You may want a different dwarf to be your broker, as that guy might spend months in the office, especially if your fort grows fast. Keep in mind trading is going to suck, you may not know the value of anything.

I forgot to set my 'keeper to highest precision!  Doh.  (I did give him an office and quarters, though.)

Check your dwarf's Analytical Ability, Memory, and Focus.  Those are the soul attributes associated with Record Keeper.  Low scores in those will make skill gain harder.  Also, for Appraiser, blind trading for a few mini-transactions should give your broker enough of a bump to reveal the values for actual trading.

Record Keeping or any of the related attributes have ZERO effect on the efficency of the bookeeper job.
Putting any stupid illiterate peasant on the job and setting the bookeeper setting to maximum precision will show 100% accurate stockpiles at all times, it will increase over time, but it doesn't actually seem to have an effect or difference of any kind.
It will essentially make that dwarf useless for eternity since he will be busy "updating stockpile records" for most of his spare time.

Appraisal is gained once per trade caravan when opening the trade window for the first time since their arrival on map.
Only one amount of experience points is gained per caravan appearance, it doesn't matter if you trade anything to them, just opening the window suffices.
So whenever a caravan appears, just have your would-be broker walk up to the depo, press "t" and give the merchants the finger.
